What Many Companies Still Don’t Understand About Manufacturing in China

Over the last 15 years, I have worked closely with Chinese EMS and ODM companies, visiting countless factories and building long-term partnerships across the manufacturing ecosystem.
One observation continues to surprise me.
There is still a major disconnect between companies looking for reliable manufacturing partners and factories in China actively seeking international collaboration.
Many Western companies struggle to identify trustworthy partners. At the same time, many Chinese manufacturers are eager to work with global customers and expand beyond their domestic markets.
What makes the Chinese ecosystem so powerful is not only cost.
It is the density of the supply chain.
In regions like Shenzhen you can move from component suppliers to PCB houses, enclosure manufacturers, injection molders, final assembly lines and testing facilities sometimes within the same day.
That proximity changes everything:
• Product iterations move faster
• Engineering challenges get solved quickly
• Costs drop because supply chains are tightly integrated
• Relationships become operational advantages
But one thing matters more than anything else:
Manufacturing relationships.
Factories do not want to be treated as anonymous suppliers. They want long-term partners who understand their capabilities, respect their expertise, and build trust over time.
When that happens, the collaboration goes far beyond transactional manufacturing.
And that is where the real competitive advantage appears.
Because in global manufacturing today, supply chain visibility and trusted partnerships often matter more than price alone.
